Boer republics

Boer republics were independent states established by Boer settlers in southern Africa, chiefly the South African Republic and the Orange Free State.

Great Trek: The nineteenth-century migration of Boer settlers from the Cape Colony into southern Africa’s interior. The migration carried settlers beyond British rule and helped establish the republics.
South African Republic: A Boer republic, also called the Transvaal, that existed from 1852 until its incorporation into the Union of South Africa in 1910. It was the largest and most influential Boer republic.
Transvaal Convention: The 1881 agreement that restored self-government to the Transvaal under British suzerainty. It formalized the South African Republic’s renewed autonomy after the First Boer War.
First Boer War: An 1880–1881 conflict in which Boer forces defeated Britain and regained Transvaal self-government. Its outcome restored the South African Republic after British annexation.
Cape Colony: A British colony at Africa’s southern tip, formerly governed by the Dutch East India Company. British policies in the colony helped prompt Boer migration inland.
Orange Free State: An independent Boer republic between the Orange and Vaal rivers from 1854 until 1902. It was the second principal Boer republic and maintained its own government until British annexation.
London Convention: The 1884 agreement that replaced the Transvaal Convention and recognized the South African Republic’s independence. It defined the republic’s international status before tensions with Britain escalated.
Second Boer War: The 1899–1902 war between Britain and the Boer republics, ending in British victory. The war ended the republics’ independence and brought them under British authority.
Dutch East India Company: A Dutch chartered company that governed the Cape from 1652 to 1795. Its Cape settlement supplied the Dutch-speaking colonial population from which Boer society developed.
Natalia Republic: A short-lived Boer republic in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, established in 1839 and annexed by Britain in 1843. It was an early Boer state that disappeared before the two enduring republics formed.
