Bohai Sea

The Bohai Sea is a shallow marginal sea of the western Pacific, bordered by northeastern China and connected to the Yellow Sea through the Bohai Strait.

Bohai Strait: The narrow sea passage connecting the Bohai Sea with the Yellow Sea. It is the Bohai Sea’s sole connection to the open Yellow Sea.
Yellow River: A major river of northern China that carries large quantities of sediment to the Bohai Sea. Its shifting mouth has repeatedly altered the sea’s southern shoreline.
Port of Tianjin: A major Chinese seaport on the western coast of Bohai Bay. It is a principal maritime gateway for Beijing and northern China.
Marine pollution: The introduction of harmful substances or energy into marine environments. Industrial and river-borne pollutants have affected Bohai’s coastal waters.
Tangshan earthquake: A devastating earthquake that struck Tangshan, China, on July 28, 1976. Its location near Bohai illustrates the region’s exposure to seismic hazards.
Liaodong Bay: The northernmost major gulf of the Bohai Sea, between the Liaodong Peninsula and mainland China. It forms the sea’s northeastern arm.
Hai River: A river system draining Beijing, Tianjin, and surrounding parts of northern China into Bohai Bay. It delivers freshwater and urban runoff to the western Bohai Sea.
Port of Dalian: A major seaport at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula. It occupies a strategic position near the Bohai Strait.
Eutrophication: Excess nutrient enrichment of water that can trigger algal growth and oxygen depletion. Nutrient inputs from rivers and coastal development can cause harmful blooms.
Tianjin Port explosion: A series of industrial explosions at Tianjin Port in August 2015. The disaster exposed risks concentrated in Bohai’s heavily industrialized port region.
