Bohai Strait

The Bohai Strait connects the Bohai Sea to the Yellow Sea between China’s Liaoning and Shandong provinces. It is the Bohai Sea’s sole natural maritime outlet.

Bohai Sea: A marginal sea in northeastern China, enclosed by the Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas and the mainland. The strait forms the Bohai Sea’s sole natural opening to the wider ocean.
Port of Yantai: A seaport in Shandong Province on the southern side of the Bohai Strait. Its location opposite Dalian makes the strait central to cross-bay transport proposals.
Laotieshan Channel: A deep-water passage in the Bohai Strait between Liaodong Peninsula and the Changshan Islands. It is a principal navigable channel through the strait.
Bohai Strait Tunnel: A proposed undersea rail tunnel linking the Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas beneath the Bohai Strait. Its feasibility remains debated because of the strait’s length, depth, geology, and cost.
Liaodong Peninsula: A peninsula in northeastern China extending south between the Bohai Sea and Korea Bay. Its southern tip helps define the strait’s northern boundary.
Bohai Train Ferry: A rail ferry service crossing the Bohai Sea between ports in Liaoning and Shandong. It provides a transport alternative to crossing the strait by road or rail tunnel.
Changshan Channel: A navigable passage among the Changshan Islands in the Bohai Strait. Its island setting illustrates the strait’s divided channels.
Undersea tunnel: A tunnel built beneath a body of water to carry transport or utilities. The proposal belongs to this demanding class of infrastructure projects.
Shandong Peninsula: A peninsula in eastern China projecting into the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea. Its northern coast forms the strait’s southern boundary.
Port of Yingkou: A seaport in Liaoning Province on the northern coast of the Bohai Sea. Its shipping routes reach the Yellow Sea through the strait.
