Bohemia

Bohemia was a historical kingdom in Central Europe centered on the lands of present-day Czechia. It became a principal land of the Bohemian Crown within the Holy Roman Empire and later the Habsburg Monarchy.

Premyslid dynasty: A Czech ruling dynasty that governed Bohemia from the ninth century until 1306. Its dukes and kings established Bohemia’s early state and expanded its authority.
Bohemian Crown: The composite lands ruled by the kings of Bohemia, including territories beyond Bohemia proper. The Crown made Bohemia the center of a wider political grouping.
Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor: A fourteenth-century king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor who made Prague a major political and cultural center. His reign marked a high point in Bohemia’s power and cultural influence.

Holy Roman Empire: A multi-centered polity of central Europe that lasted from the Middle Ages until 1806. Bohemian kings held electoral and princely status within the Empire.
Jan Hus: A Bohemian religious reformer whose criticism of church practices led to his execution in 1415. His death ignited a reform movement that transformed Bohemian politics.
Defenestration of Prague (1618): The 1618 uprising in which Bohemian Protestant nobles threw imperial officials from a Prague castle window. The revolt began the Bohemian phase of the Thirty Years’ War.
Prague: The capital of Czechia and the historic political center of Bohemia. Royal, imperial, and cultural institutions concentrated in Bohemia’s chief city.
