Bolometric luminosity

Bolometric luminosity is the total radiant energy a star emits per unit time, summed over all wavelengths. It measures intrinsic power rather than brightness as seen from Earth.

Spectral energy distribution: A description of an object's emitted or received energy as a function of wavelength or frequency. Integrating this distribution across wavelengths yields bolometric luminosity.
Luminosity: The energy emitted by an object per unit time. Bolometric luminosity is the wavelength-integrated form of this general power quantity.
Hertzsprung–Russell diagram: A plot comparing stars' luminosities with their surface temperatures or spectral types. Bolometric luminosity supplies the vertical coordinate for stars with broad spectral coverage.
Monochromatic luminosity: The emitted power per unit frequency or wavelength at a specified spectral position. Unlike bolometric luminosity, it describes only a narrow part of a star's spectrum.
Bolometric correction: The adjustment that converts a measured magnitude in one passband into an estimate of total emitted radiant power. It estimates the light outside observed bands when calculating a star's total output.
Radiant flux: The radiant energy passing through a surface per unit time. It is the measurable energy rate from which stellar luminosity can be inferred.
Stellar radius: The distance from a star's center to its visible surface. Radius can be inferred from luminosity and effective temperature using the Stefan–Boltzmann law.
Visual luminosity: A star's luminosity estimated from its emission in the visible spectral range. Visible output omits ultraviolet and infrared energy included in the bolometric total.
Stefan–Boltzmann law: The law stating that a blackbody's emitted power per unit area is proportional to the fourth power of its temperature. Combined with stellar radius, it relates surface temperature to total luminosity.
Radiant intensity: Radiant power emitted per unit solid angle in a specified direction. It differs from total luminosity by retaining directional rather than all-sky information.
