Bombay Presidency

The Bombay Presidency was a major administrative province of British India, governed from Bombay. Its territory changed over time and included parts of present-day western India and Pakistan.

Bombay Island: An island on India’s west coast that became the site of Bombay, now Mumbai. Its transfer to English control established the Presidency’s principal city and governing base.
Governor of Bombay: The chief executive officer of the Bombay Presidency under Company and Crown rule. The governor headed the provincial government and represented higher imperial authority.
Mountstuart Elphinstone: A British official who served as governor of Bombay from 1819 to 1827. His administration helped consolidate Company rule after the defeat of the Peshwa.
Bombay State: An Indian state formed after independence from territories of the former Bombay Presidency and other regions. It carried forward much of the Presidency’s territory after British rule ended.
East India Company: An English joint-stock company that acquired political and territorial power in South Asia. Company rule created and administered the Presidency before the British Crown took control.
Bombay Legislative Council: A legislative body that advised or shared lawmaking functions with Bombay’s colonial government. Its changing powers show how limited representative institutions operated within the Presidency.
Dadabhai Naoroji: An Indian intellectual and political leader who analyzed the economic effects of British rule. His critique of colonial wealth extraction emerged from Bombay’s political and commercial world.
Maharashtra: A state in western India formed in 1960 with Marathi as its principal language. It inherited Bombay city and much of the former Presidency’s central and southern districts.
Treaty of Bassein (1534): An agreement by which the Sultan of Gujarat ceded Bassein and nearby territories to Portugal. Portuguese control of the coast preceded the later English acquisition of Bombay.
Bombay Civil Service: The colonial administrative service responsible for governing Bombay Presidency and its districts. Its officials implemented provincial policy across a large and diverse territory.
