Bone china

Bone china is a translucent ceramic made with bone ash, usually alongside kaolin and other minerals. Its bone-derived calcium phosphate contributes to its whiteness, strength, and translucency.

Bone ash: A calcium-phosphate-rich material produced by calcining animal bones. It supplies the calcium phosphate that distinguishes bone china from other porcelain.
Ceramic firing: The controlled heating of shaped clay or ceramic materials to produce permanent physical and chemical changes. Firing bonds the ingredients and develops the ceramic body’s translucency and strength.
Thomas Frye: An Irish-born painter and inventor who co-founded the Bow porcelain factory in London. Frye developed an early bone-ash porcelain formulation at Bow in the 1740s.
Tableware: Dishes, cups, and utensils used for serving and eating food. Bone china is widely used for refined but relatively durable dining sets.
Kaolin: A fine white clay rich in the mineral kaolinite, used in ceramics and paper. It provides plasticity for shaping and helps form the ceramic body.
Translucency: The property of transmitting light without allowing clear images to be seen through a material. Bone china’s thin, dense body lets light pass through while remaining opaque in detail.
Josiah Spode: An English potter who founded Spode and helped establish the successful bone-china formula. Spode refined and commercialized the body that became standard English bone china.
Teacup: A small cup designed for drinking tea, often paired with a saucer. Thin bone-china teacups show the material’s translucency and lightness.
Feldspar: A group of abundant rock-forming minerals that can act as fluxes in ceramic bodies. Feldspar helps the body vitrify during firing, contributing to density and translucency.
Ceramic glaze: A glassy coating fused to a ceramic surface during firing. Glaze seals and decorates bone china, while its fit must accommodate the body’s expansion.
