Bone histology

Bone histology is the microscopic study of bone tissue, including its cellular organization, matrix, and growth patterns.

Osteoblast: A bone-forming cell that secretes osteoid and helps mineralize it. Osteoblasts build the matrix examined in bone histology.
Ossification: The formation of bone tissue through deposition and mineralization of extracellular matrix. Ossification produces the tissue patterns examined histologically.
Bone biopsy: The removal of bone tissue for microscopic examination and diagnosis. Biopsy specimens make microscopic architecture available for diagnosis.
Growth plate: A cartilage region in a growing long bone where longitudinal growth occurs before cartilage is replaced by bone. Its zones show the sequence of endochondral bone growth under the microscope.
Osteocyte: A mature bone cell embedded in mineralized matrix, housed in a lacuna and connected through canaliculi. Osteocytes occupy the spaces and channels visible within bone tissue.
Bone remodeling: The ongoing replacement of old or damaged bone by coordinated resorption and formation. Remodeling leaves identifiable resorption boundaries and newly formed tissue.
Osteoporosis: A skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone strength and increased fracture risk. Histological features can reveal altered bone formation and resorption.
Haversian system: A central canal and surrounding concentric bone lamellae forming an osteon in compact bone. It is a classic microscopic pattern used to describe compact bone.
Osteoclast: A large multinucleated cell that resorbs bone by dissolving mineral and degrading matrix. Its resorption surfaces reveal how bone tissue is remodeled.
Osteon: A cylindrical structural unit of compact bone, consisting of concentric lamellae around a central canal. Osteons are the characteristic repeating units in adult compact bone.
