Bone tumor

A bone tumor is an abnormal growth in bone that may be benign or malignant and may originate there or spread from another part of the body.

Primary bone tumor: A bone tumor that originates in bone or its supporting tissues. This category separates tumors that begin in bone from those that arrive from elsewhere.
Osteosarcoma: A malignant bone tumor whose cells produce immature bone. It illustrates a primary cancer arising from bone-forming cells.
Bone biopsy: Removal of bone or tumor tissue for examination under a microscope. A properly planned biopsy can establish the tumor diagnosis without compromising later surgery.
Soft-tissue tumor: An abnormal growth arising in tissues such as muscle, fat, nerves, or blood vessels. Soft-tissue tumors may lie near bone but originate outside it.
Enchondroma: A benign cartilage-forming tumor located within bone, often in the hands or feet. It is a frequent benign primary bone tumor that is often found incidentally.
Bone metastasis: Cancer that has spread from another site to bone. Many malignant growths found in bone are metastases rather than primary bone cancers.
Chondrosarcoma: A malignant tumor characterized by production of cartilage by tumor cells. Its cartilage-producing tissue distinguishes it from bone-forming malignancies.
Medical imaging: Techniques that create images of internal structures for diagnosis and monitoring. Imaging maps a lesion's location, extent, and effects on surrounding bone.
Bone cyst: A fluid-filled or hollow lesion within bone, usually not a true tumor. Cysts can resemble tumors on imaging while having different tissue structure.
Giant cell tumor of bone: A usually benign but locally aggressive bone tumor containing many giant cells. It shows that benign classification does not always mean harmless local behavior.
