Bone Wars

The Bone Wars were a late nineteenth-century rivalry between American paleontologists Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope, marked by competitive fossil collecting and public attacks.

Othniel Charles Marsh: An American paleontologist who led major fossil expeditions and became the first president of the United States Geological Survey. His Yale-backed expeditions made him Cope’s principal rival in collecting Western fossils.
Fossil collecting: The discovery, excavation, and preservation of fossil remains for scientific study. Both paleontologists organized collecting campaigns that made fossil acquisition a competitive race.
