Book of Judges

A book of the Hebrew Bible recounting Israel’s history between Joshua’s death and the rise of the monarchy. Its stories portray cycles of apostasy, oppression, deliverance, and social disorder.

Tribes of Israel: The traditional twelve kinship groups descended from the sons of Jacob, associated with territories in ancient Israel. The book depicts a loose tribal society before a central monarchy united Israel.
Deuteronomistic theology: A biblical interpretation of Israel’s history in which obedience to God brings blessing and disobedience brings calamity. This framework connects Israel’s apostasy in Judges with oppression and eventual deliverance.

Apostasy: The abandonment or rejection of a religious faith, allegiance, or practice. The stories repeatedly begin with Israel abandoning its worship of God.
Gideon: A judge in the biblical Book of Judges who defeats the Midianites with a small force and later makes an ephod associated with Israel’s unfaithfulness. His victories and later actions complicate the image of a deliverer.
Ancient Israel: A historical society in the southern Levant that developed into the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. The book’s traditions concern the society that preceded those kingdoms.
King Saul: The first king of Israel in the biblical narrative, anointed by the prophet Samuel. His rise marks the political change that succeeds the period portrayed in Judges.
