Book of Revelation

The final book of the Christian New Testament presents visions of divine judgment, conflict, and the establishment of a new creation. Written in vivid apocalyptic imagery, it addresses early Christian communities facing pressure and uncertainty.

Apocalyptic literature: A genre of revelation literature portraying divine disclosure, cosmic conflict, and the end of an age. Revelation belongs to this genre, using visions to interpret present suffering and future transformation.
Apocalypticism: A worldview that interprets history through divine revelation of cosmic conflict and an approaching transformation. Revelation frames political crises within a struggle between divine and evil powers.
Roman Asia: A province of the Roman Empire in western Asia Minor, containing the cities addressed in Revelation. The book’s opening messages name churches located in this province.
Preterism: An interpretation that treats much biblical apocalyptic prophecy as fulfilled in the ancient past. It reads Revelation chiefly against first-century events rather than as a timetable for the distant future.
Antichrist: An opponent of Christ in Christian tradition, associated especially with deception and opposition to God. Later Christian thought often connects Revelation’s beast imagery with the Antichrist.
John of Patmos: The prophetic author who identifies himself as John in Revelation and locates himself on Patmos. The book presents its visions as revelations received by John on Patmos.
Numerology in the Bible: The use of numbers with symbolic or patterned significance in biblical texts. Numbers such as seven, twelve, and 666 organize Revelation’s images and interpretations.
Domitian: Roman emperor from 81 to 96 CE, whose reign is often associated with Revelation’s historical setting. A traditional dating places Revelation’s composition near the end of his reign.
Futurism: An interpretation that expects much of biblical apocalyptic prophecy to be fulfilled in the future. It locates Revelation’s major judgments and conflicts near the end of history.
Armageddon: The place named in Revelation as the gathering point for the final battle between opposing powers. Its name became a broad cultural shorthand for catastrophic final conflict.
