Bookbinding

Bookbinding is the craft of assembling pages into books and attaching protective covers. Its methods range from hand-sewn structures to industrial processes.

Book sewing: The process of joining a book’s sections by sewing through their folds or supports. Sewn sections form durable text blocks that can open with flexibility.
Text block: The assembled pages or sections of a book, before or after attachment to its cover. Binding methods join and reinforce this central unit.
Codex: A book format made of leaves joined along one edge, replacing the continuous roll for many uses. The codex created the basic page-and-spine form that bookbinding develops.
Library binding: Durable binding designed to withstand frequent handling in libraries and other institutions. Reinforced structures extend the working life of heavily used books.
Saddle stitching: A binding method that staples folded sheets through their center fold. It makes thin booklets cheaply but cannot support the thickness of many sewn or cased books.
Case binding: A binding method in which a separately made cover is attached to a book’s text block. This common hardcover structure separates cover construction from page assembly.
Book section: A group of folded sheets nested together to form a unit in a book. Sections provide the folded gatherings that traditional sewing binds together.
Coptic binding: A historical binding style in which sections are linked by exposed sewing across the spine. Its exposed chain stitching is among the early distinctive codex structures.
Book restoration: The repair or reconstruction of damaged books to recover function or appearance. Binding repair addresses failures in covers, sewing, joints, and spines.
Spiral binding: A binding method that joins punched pages with a continuous plastic or metal coil. Unlike a conventional spine, its coil lets pages turn fully around.
