Borosilicate glass

Borosilicate glass is a silica-based glass containing boron trioxide. Its low thermal expansion gives it strong resistance to thermal shock, while its composition also provides chemical durability.

Silica: Silicon dioxide, a compound that forms the principal network of many glasses and minerals. It is the main glass-forming ingredient in borosilicate glass.
Laboratory glassware: Glass equipment used for containing, measuring, heating, or transferring substances in laboratories. Borosilicate glass is widely used for vessels that face heat and reactive chemicals.
Soda-lime glass: The common glass made chiefly from silica, sodium oxide, and calcium oxide. It is less resistant to thermal shock and many chemicals than borosilicate glass.
Otto Schott: A German chemist and glassmaker who advanced scientific glass composition and founded a major glassworks. His research helped establish borosilicate glass as a controlled industrial material.
Glass: An amorphous solid, commonly formed by cooling a melt without crystallizing it. Borosilicate glass is one composition within the wider family of glasses.
