Boshin War

The Boshin War was a Japanese civil war fought from 1868 to 1869 between forces supporting the Tokugawa shogunate and those seeking to restore imperial rule.

Battle of Toba–Fushimi: A January 1868 battle near Kyoto that began open fighting between imperial and shogunate forces. Its imperial victory transformed a political confrontation into a nationwide war.
Convention of Kanagawa: A 1854 agreement that opened Japanese ports to American ships and began the end of Japan’s enforced isolation. Foreign pressure intensified the political crisis that weakened the shogunate.
Tokugawa Yoshinobu: The fifteenth and final Tokugawa shogun, who returned governing authority to the emperor in 1867 and led the shogunate during the war’s outbreak. His contested surrender of power and retreat framed the shogunate’s position in the conflict.
Tokugawa shogunate: The military government that ruled Japan under the Tokugawa family from 1603 until 1868. Its overthrow was the war’s central political result.
Satsuma Rebellion: An 1877 revolt by former samurai in Satsuma against the Meiji government, defeated by the national army. Unlike the Boshin War, it challenged the new imperial government rather than the Tokugawa shogunate.
Battle of Ueno: A July 1868 battle in which imperial forces defeated shogunate loyalists at Edo’s Kan’ei-ji temple complex. The defeat broke organized resistance in the former shogunal capital.
Sonnō jōi: A political slogan meaning “revere the emperor, expel the barbarians,” prominent in late Tokugawa Japan. Its anti-foreign and pro-imperial language helped mobilize opposition to shogunal rule.
Saigō Takamori: A Satsuma samurai and political leader who helped direct the imperial coalition during the Boshin War. He was a principal commander in the campaign against shogunate forces.
Meiji government: The centralized Japanese government established under Emperor Meiji after the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate. It consolidated power after the imperial coalition won the war.
Jōkyū War: A 1221 conflict in which retired Emperor Go-Toba’s forces fought the Kamakura shogunate. It was an earlier Japanese civil war over the balance of power between emperor and military government.
