Botfly

A fly in the family Oestridae whose larvae develop in the bodies or tissues of mammals. Different species parasitize particular hosts and body sites.

Myiasis: Infestation of living humans or other vertebrates by dipteran fly larvae. Botfly larvae cause a distinctive form of myiasis by developing in host tissues.
Oestridae: A family of flies whose larvae are obligate parasites of mammals. Botflies belong to this family, which includes species with different host and tissue specializations.
Furuncular myiasis: A form of myiasis in which fly larvae develop within boil-like skin lesions. Human botfly larvae commonly produce this presentation, with a breathing opening in each lesion.
New World screwworm: Cochliomyia hominivorax, a blow fly whose larvae consume living tissue in open wounds. It causes traumatic myiasis but is not a botfly and does not usually form a contained warble.
Dermatobia hominis: A Neotropical botfly whose larvae cause furuncular myiasis in humans and other mammals. This species uses mosquitoes and other insects to carry its eggs to hosts.
Diptera: The insect order containing true flies, which have one functional pair of wings. Botflies are true flies, sharing the order's basic body plan and life stages.
Oestriasis: Infestation by larvae of Oestrus ovis in the nasal passages and sinuses of sheep or goats. This livestock disease is caused by a botfly species that targets the head.
Old World screwworm: Chrysomya bezziana, a blow fly whose larvae invade wounds and living tissue. Its destructive wound infestation differs from the often localized tissue development of botfly larvae.
Oestrus ovis: A sheep botfly whose larvae develop in the nasal passages and sinuses of sheep and goats. Its larvae reach the host when adult flies deposit them near the nostrils.
Holometabolism: Complete metamorphosis in which an insect passes through egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The parasitic botfly larva transforms into a free-living adult fly.
