Boudinage

Boudinage is a geological structure in which a competent rock layer stretches and separates into rounded or sausage-shaped segments within weaker surrounding rock. The segments are called boudins.

Competence contrast: A difference in resistance to deformation between adjacent rocks or layers. Boudinage develops when the stretching layer resists deformation more strongly than its surroundings.
Foliation (geology): A planar fabric in metamorphic rock, produced by aligned minerals or compositional layering. Boudinage commonly affects layers within a foliated metamorphic rock.
Pinch-and-swell structure: A layered-rock structure in which a competent layer alternates between thicker swellings and thinner necks without fully separating. It resembles incipient boudinage but retains continuity through the necks.
Structural geology: The study of rock deformation, geological structures, and the forces that produce them. Boudinage is used to interpret structures and deformation in the Earth's crust.
Ductile deformation: Permanent change in a material's shape without macroscopic fracturing. The weaker matrix can flow around boudins while the competent layer stretches.
Metamorphic rock: Rock transformed from pre-existing rock by heat, pressure, or chemically active fluids. Many classic boudinage structures occur in metamorphic rocks deformed at depth.
Chocolate-tablet boudinage: Boudinage in which extension in two directions divides a competent layer into block-like segments. It is a distinctive multidirectional form of the structure.
Finite strain analysis: The measurement and interpretation of total deformation recorded by geological materials. Boudin dimensions and shapes can constrain the amount and direction of extension.
Tectonic extension: Crustal stretching that increases the distance between points in the Earth's crust. Extension pulls the competent layer apart along its length.
Rheology: The study of how materials deform and flow under applied forces. Rock rheology governs whether a layer stretches, flows, or fractures.
