Boundary conditions

Boundary conditions specify the values of a solution or its derivatives at the boundary of its domain. They help determine whether a mathematical model has a unique solution.

Initial value problem: A differential equation problem that specifies a solution and possibly its derivatives at one starting point. It prescribes data at an initial point rather than along a domain boundary.
Boundary value problem: A differential equation problem whose solution must satisfy conditions at specified boundary points or surfaces. Boundary conditions are the constraints that define this broader problem type.
Heat equation: A partial differential equation describing how temperature diffuses through space over time. Its solutions depend on temperatures or heat fluxes prescribed at material boundaries.
Cauchy problem: A differential-equation problem specifying initial data for a solution and its relevant derivatives. It commonly prescribes data on an initial surface instead of a spatial boundary.
Dirichlet boundary condition: A boundary condition that fixes the value of a function on the boundary. It is the direct specification of solution values.
Green's function: A kernel that expresses a linear differential equation's response to a localized source under specified boundary conditions. Its form depends on the boundary conditions imposed on the operator.
Laplace's equation: The equation stating that a function's Laplacian is zero in a region. Electrostatic and steady-state models use boundary data to determine its interior solution.
Periodic extension: The construction of a periodic function by repeating its values across successive intervals or cells. Periodic boundary conditions can represent a seamless repeated extension of a finite domain.
Neumann boundary condition: A boundary condition that fixes the normal derivative of a function on the boundary. It prescribes how the solution changes across the boundary.
Eigenvalue problem: A problem seeking nonzero solutions and parameter values for an equation involving a linear operator. Boundary conditions select which eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are allowed.
