Box office is the revenue generated by ticket sales for theatrical film screenings. It is commonly reported by film, cinema, market, and release period.

Box-office gross: The total ticket-sale revenue reported for a film or cinema over a specified period and territory. This is the basic measure used to describe a film’s theatrical earnings.
Wide release: A film release that opens in a large number of cinemas at once. Opening widely can quickly raise a film’s reported gross and market visibility.
Film budget: The production and marketing costs associated with making and releasing a film. A gross must be weighed against costs before commercial performance can be assessed.
Greenlighting: The formal approval of a proposed film or other production for financing and development. Past theatrical grosses help studios decide which projects to approve.
Admissions: The number of tickets sold or spectators admitted to a venue or event. Admissions distinguish audience size from the money those audiences spend.
