Bozeman Trail

The Bozeman Trail was a nineteenth-century overland route from the Oregon Trail near Fort Laramie to Montana’s goldfields. Its passage through contested Indigenous lands fueled conflict between the United States and Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples.

Montana gold rush: A series of gold discoveries in Montana Territory that drew miners and settlers west in the 1860s. The goldfields were the trail’s destination and the economic force behind its opening.
Fort Phil Kearny: A United States Army post established in 1866 along the Bozeman Trail in present-day Wyoming. It guarded the route’s central stretch and became a focus of Indigenous attacks.
Red Cloud: An Oglala Lakota leader who opposed United States encroachment and led resistance during Red Cloud’s War. His leadership helped force the closure of the trail’s military forts.
Fetterman Fight: An 1866 battle near Fort Phil Kearny in which Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho warriors killed Captain William J. Fetterman and his command. The defeat demonstrated the danger of maintaining the trail’s forts.
John Bozeman: A frontiersman who helped establish and publicize the route that became known as the Bozeman Trail. His name became attached to the route he helped pioneer.
Fort Reno: A United States Army post built in 1865 near the Bozeman Trail in present-day Wyoming. It was one of the forts established to protect travel along the route.
Crazy Horse: An Oglala Lakota war leader who fought United States forces during the nineteenth century. He was among the Indigenous leaders resisting the route’s military occupation.
Wagon Box Fight: An 1867 battle near Fort Phil Kearny in which a small United States force repelled a much larger Indigenous attack. It showed that military escorts could survive attacks without securing lasting control of the route.
Oregon Trail: A nineteenth-century emigrant route from Missouri River settlements to Oregon’s Willamette Valley. The Bozeman Trail branched from it near Fort Laramie.
Fort C. F. Smith: A United States Army post established in 1866 along the Bozeman Trail in present-day Montana. Its garrison protected the trail’s northern section during the conflict.
