Breaking the fourth wall

Breaking the fourth wall is a storytelling technique in which a character acknowledges or addresses an audience beyond the fictional world.

Direct address: Direct address is speech aimed explicitly at a person or audience rather than spoken about them. A character breaks the wall when direct address reaches the audience outside the story.
The Knight of the Burning Pestle: The Knight of the Burning Pestle is a 1607 comedy by Francis Beaumont that stages audience interruption and theatrical self-awareness. Its framing spectators intrude into the play, making theatrical convention part of the joke.
Fourth wall: The fourth wall is the imagined boundary between a performance’s fictional world and its audience. Breaking the wall depends on the convention of an invisible boundary between performers and spectators.
Alienation effect: The alienation effect is Bertolt Brecht’s approach to disrupting theatrical illusion and encouraging critical spectatorship. Direct audience acknowledgment can interrupt immersion, though it does not automatically create Brechtian critique.

Comic relief: Comic relief is a humorous episode that interrupts or eases tension in a dramatic work. A character’s knowing aside can release tension by puncturing the scene’s seriousness.
Narration: Narration is the act of telling or presenting a sequence of events. A narrator can address the audience directly, making the technique possible beyond dialogue.
Annie Hall: Annie Hall is a 1977 romantic comedy film directed by Woody Allen. Alvy Singer addresses the camera and interrupts scenes to comment on his story.
