Breakup of Yugoslavia

The political dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, beginning in 1991 and producing several independent states through wars, negotiations, and constitutional change.

Slovenian independence: Slovenia's secession from Yugoslavia in 1991, followed by a brief conflict with federal forces. Its rapid secession began the sequence of republics leaving the federation.
