Brickwork

Brickwork is construction made by laying bricks in courses and bonding them into walls or other structures. The term also covers the craft and techniques used to build with brick.

Brick: A small rectangular masonry unit, commonly made from fired clay or concrete. Bricks are the units arranged into courses and bonded to form brickwork.
Stretcher bond: A brick bond in which bricks are laid with their long faces visible and joints staggered between courses. Its simple overlap is common in walls built chiefly from stretchers.
Brick veneer: A nonstructural outer layer of brick attached to a supporting wall or frame. Veneer uses brickwork as an exterior finish rather than the building’s main structure.
Concrete block: A large masonry unit made from concrete, commonly used to build walls. Concrete blocks create masonry walls with larger units and different detailing than brickwork.
Mortar: A workable mixture, usually of cement or lime, sand, and water, used to bind masonry units. Mortar fills joints and bonds bricks into a stable assembly.
English bond: A brick bond alternating courses of stretchers and headers. Alternating courses tie the wall through its thickness.
Brick facade: The exterior face of a building formed or finished with brick. Facade work makes brickwork’s color, texture, and bond visible on a building’s exterior.
Stone masonry: Construction using natural stone units joined or fitted together to form walls and structures. Stone masonry uses natural units rather than standardized fired-clay bricks.
Brick bond: A pattern for arranging masonry units so that vertical joints are staggered or otherwise coordinated. Bond determines how bricks overlap across courses and how the wall holds together.
Flemish bond: A brick bond with alternating headers and stretchers in each course. Its repeating face pattern combines visible headers and stretchers within each course.
