British Burma

British Burma was the territory in Southeast Asia governed by Britain after its conquest in stages between 1824 and 1886. It became independent as Burma in 1948.

First Anglo-Burmese War: A war fought from 1824 to 1826 between the Burmese Konbaung dynasty and the British East India Company. Its 1826 treaty transferred Arakan and Tenasserim to British control.
British Raj: The system of British rule over India from 1858 to 1947. Burma was administered as part of British India until 1937.
Mindon Min: The penultimate king of the Konbaung dynasty, who ruled from 1853 to 1878. His reign preceded the final British conquest and annexation of Upper Burma.
Saya San rebellion: A widespread rural uprising against British rule in Burma from 1930 to 1932, led by Saya San. It exposed the pressures colonial taxation and rural change placed on cultivators.
Japanese occupation of Burma: The period of Japanese military rule in Burma from 1942 to 1945 during the Second World War. It interrupted British control before Britain briefly restored its authority.
Treaty of Yandabo: The 1826 treaty that ended the First Anglo-Burmese War and imposed territorial and financial terms on Burma. It established Britain’s first major territorial foothold in Burma.
Government of Burma Act 1935: British legislation that provided for Burma’s separation from India and a new constitutional system. It supplied the legal framework for Burma’s 1937 separation.
Thibaw Min: The last king of Burma, deposed and exiled by Britain after the 1885 invasion. His removal marked the end of the Burmese monarchy under British expansion.
Burmese nationalism: A political movement seeking Burmese self-government and independence from foreign rule. It grew into the organized challenge that ended British sovereignty.
Panglong Agreement: The 1947 agreement between Aung San and representatives of several frontier peoples on cooperation toward independence. It addressed the political relationship between central Burma and frontier areas.
