British Empire

The worldwide collection of territories ruled or administered by Britain, expanding from the 16th century and largely dissolving during the 20th century.

East India Company: An English and later British joint-stock company that traded in Asia and governed much of the Indian subcontinent. Its trading privileges and armies made it a major instrument of British rule in South Asia.
Age of Discovery: The period of intensified European maritime exploration and overseas expansion beginning in the 15th century. Its voyages opened routes that English and later British expeditions entered.
