British idealism

British idealism was a late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century philosophical movement that treated reality as fundamentally spiritual or ideal and drew heavily on German idealism.

T. H. Green: Thomas Hill Green was an English idealist philosopher and political thinker who emphasized the social conditions of human freedom. His lectures helped establish idealism as a major force in British philosophy.
Absolute idealism: Absolute idealism is the view that reality forms a single all-encompassing spiritual or experiential whole. This was the metaphysical position most closely associated with Bradley and his successors.
German idealism: German idealism is a philosophical tradition associated with Kant, Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel that examines the role of mind in experience and reality. British idealism adapted concepts and methods developed by German idealist philosophers.
British analytic philosophy: British analytic philosophy is a tradition emphasizing clarity, logical analysis, and close attention to language and argument. Its early development was shaped by Moore’s and Russell’s rejection of idealist doctrines.
F. H. Bradley: Francis Herbert Bradley was an English idealist philosopher best known for arguing that reality is a unified Absolute. His metaphysics became the movement’s most influential and controversial expression.
Hegelianism: Hegelianism is the philosophical tradition derived from G. W. F. Hegel’s account of reality, history, and thought. British idealists adapted Hegel’s systematic approach to reality and social life.
Immanuel Kant: Immanuel Kant was an eighteenth-century German philosopher who argued that experience is structured by the mind’s forms and concepts. British idealists inherited and revised questions raised by Kant’s account of knowledge.
Bertrand Russell: Bertrand Russell was a British philosopher and logician who helped develop analytic philosophy and mathematical logic. His early revolt against idealism helped redirect British metaphysics toward analysis and logic.
Bernard Bosanquet: Bernard Bosanquet was an English idealist philosopher and political theorist who defended the state as an ethical institution. He carried idealist metaphysics into debates about society and political obligation.
Appearance and Reality: Appearance and Reality is F. H. Bradley’s 1893 book arguing that ordinary experience presents a contradictory, incomplete view of reality. Bradley’s major work develops the movement’s challenge to a world of independent things and relations.
