British Mandate of Mesopotamia

The British-administered territory established in Iraq after World War I under a League of Nations mandate. It ended when Iraq became independent in 1932.

Mesopotamian campaign: The First World War campaign in which British and Ottoman forces fought for control of Mesopotamia. British military occupation of the region preceded its postwar administration.
Faisal I of Iraq: The first king of Iraq, crowned in 1921 after previously leading the Arab Revolt and briefly ruling Syria. Britain installed Faisal as monarch to lead Iraq under the mandate arrangement.
Gertrude Bell: A British writer, archaeologist, and political officer who helped shape the early Iraqi state. Bell advised on Iraq’s administration and supported Faisal’s accession to the throne.
