British Somaliland

British Somaliland was a British protectorate in the north of present-day Somalia from the late nineteenth century until 1960. It became independent on 26 June 1960 and united days later with the former Italian Somaliland to form the Somali Republic.

Somali Sultanates: Somali polities ruled by sultans, including states that negotiated with European powers in the nineteenth century. British protection agreements were made with Somali authorities along the northern coast.
British Somaliland Camel Corps: A British colonial force that used camel-mounted troops to patrol Somaliland’s interior. It was created to extend the protectorate’s limited military reach beyond the coast.
State of Somaliland: An independent state that existed from 26 June to 1 July 1960 in the former British Somaliland. It was the protectorate’s brief sovereign successor before union with Italian Somaliland.
Italian Somaliland: An Italian colony in southern Somalia that became independent on 1 July 1960. It united with British Somaliland, despite following a different colonial and administrative history.
Dervish War: The conflict between the Dervish movement and British, Ethiopian, and Italian forces from 1899 to 1920. It exposed the difficulty of governing Somaliland’s interior from a small coastal administration.
Anglo-French rivalry: Competition between Britain and France for strategic territory and influence, especially during imperial expansion. British interest in the coast grew partly from concern about French expansion near the Gulf of Aden.
Dervish movement: A Somali-led religious and political movement that resisted foreign rule in the Horn of Africa. Its armed resistance challenged British authority for two decades.
Somali Republic: The state formed in 1960 by the union of the former British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland. The protectorate’s leaders joined the southern territory to establish a shared Somali state.
French Somaliland: A French territory in the Horn of Africa, now the Republic of Djibouti. Its continued French rule contrasts with the rapid independence of British Somaliland in 1960.
Battle of Dul Madoba: A 1913 battle in which Dervish forces defeated a British-led force in Somaliland. The defeat demonstrated the vulnerability of British-led patrols before the 1920 air campaign.
