British West Indies

The British West Indies were British colonies and territories in the Caribbean, including islands and mainland possessions. Their political arrangements ranged from separately governed colonies to federations and dependencies.

English colonization of the Americas: The establishment of English settlements and colonies in the Americas from the sixteenth century onward. English expansion created the Caribbean possessions later grouped as the British West Indies.

Samuel Sharpe: A Jamaican Baptist deacon who organized the 1831–1832 slave rebellion known as the Baptist War. The rebellion intensified pressure for emancipation in the British Caribbean.
Crown colony: A British colony whose government was controlled directly by the Crown through appointed officials. Crown-colony government shaped political authority in many Caribbean possessions.
Jamaican independence: Jamaica’s attainment of independence from Britain in 1962. Jamaica’s departure helped bring the West Indies Federation to an end.
Spanish West Indies: Caribbean territories historically governed by Spain, including Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola. Spanish rule offers a contrasting imperial history within the same region.
