Broadcast syndication

Broadcast syndication licenses radio or television programs to multiple stations or networks, often outside the schedule of the program’s originating network.

Syndication exclusivity: A United States rule that lets a local television station protect certain syndicated programs from competing distant signals. It limits cable carriage of competing programs in a station’s protected market.
Rerun: A repeat broadcast of a program episode that has aired previously. Syndication commonly gives older episodes repeated local airings.
Broadcast network: An organization that supplies programming to affiliated stations on a coordinated schedule. A network organizes shared programming, unlike syndication’s station-by-station licensing.
Television syndication market: The marketplace in which television programs are licensed to stations, networks, and other distributors. Syndication creates a secondary revenue market for programs after their initial production or network run.
First-run syndication: Syndication in which a program is made specifically for distribution to multiple stations rather than first airing on a network. These programs enter syndication without a prior network run.
Daytime television: Television programming scheduled during daytime hours, typically on weekdays. Syndicated talk and game shows have long filled daytime schedules.
Network affiliation: A contractual relationship in which a local station carries programming from a national television network. Affiliation commits station time to network programming rather than independently licensed shows.
Television rerun: A television broadcast of an episode or program that has already aired. Repeated syndication broadcasts can extend a show’s audience and commercial life.
Off-network syndication: The licensing of previously network-broadcast television programs to local stations for later reruns. It turns a completed network run into a second market for the same episodes.
Television game show: A television program in which contestants compete in games or answer questions for prizes. Many game shows are produced for first-run syndication across local stations.
