Broca's area

Broca's area is a region in the dominant frontal lobe, usually in the left hemisphere, associated with speech production, language processing, and related functions.

Inferior frontal gyrus: A frontal-lobe region comprising several cortical gyri, including the pars opercularis and pars triangularis. Broca's area is commonly localized to parts of this gyrus.
Broca's aphasia: A language disorder marked by effortful, often nonfluent speech, commonly following damage to dominant frontal language networks. It was historically linked to damage in Broca's area.
Paul Broca: A French physician and anthropologist who reported evidence linking left frontal brain damage to speech loss in 1861. His clinical observations established the region's association with speech.
Wernicke's area: A traditionally defined posterior temporal language region associated with speech comprehension. It is often contrasted with Broca's area as a frontal counterpart for language production.

Jean-Baptiste Bouillaud: A French physician who argued that speech was localized in the frontal lobes decades before Broca's famous cases. His earlier localization claims formed part of the debate Broca's evidence revived.
Wernicke's aphasia: A language disorder involving fluent speech that may lack meaning, often with impaired comprehension. Its typical profile contrasts with the effortful speech associated with Broca's aphasia.
