Bronchus

A bronchus is a large airway branching from the trachea into a lung. Its branching network conducts air toward smaller airways and the gas-exchanging regions.

Trachea: The cartilaginous airway connecting the larynx to the bronchi. The trachea divides into the main bronchi at its lower end.
Carina of trachea: The ridge inside the trachea where it divides into the main bronchi. This landmark marks the branching point that gives rise to the bronchi.
Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchi, commonly associated with cough and increased mucus production. Inflamed bronchial lining can narrow the airway and increase mucus.
Larynx: The organ between the pharynx and trachea that protects the airway and produces voice. The larynx lies above the trachea and does not branch into the lungs.
Main bronchus: Either of the two primary branches of the trachea, each entering one lung. The right and left main bronchi begin the airway tree within the lungs.
Right main bronchus: The main airway branch carrying air from the trachea into the right lung. It is wider, shorter, and more vertical than the left main bronchus.
Bronchiectasis: Chronic abnormal widening of bronchi, often associated with persistent infection and impaired mucus clearance. Structural damage to bronchial walls alters airway clearance and promotes infection.
Alveolus: A microscopic air sac where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged with blood. Bronchi conduct air; alveoli provide the thin surfaces for gas exchange.
Bronchial tree: The branching system of airways extending from the trachea into the lungs. Bronchi form the large conducting branches of this complete airway network.
Left main bronchus: The main airway branch carrying air from the trachea into the left lung. It passes beneath the aortic arch and is longer than the right main bronchus.
