Brooks Range

The Brooks Range is a mountain range in northern Alaska that forms part of the Continental Divide and separates the Arctic Slope from Alaska’s interior.

Arctic Slope: The Arctic-facing region of Alaska north of the Brooks Range, draining toward the Arctic Ocean. The range’s northern flank descends into this distinct Alaskan region.
Atigun Pass: A high mountain pass through the Brooks Range in Alaska, crossed by the Dalton Highway. This low route through the range carries road traffic between the interior and Arctic Slope.
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve: A vast protected area in northern Alaska, encompassing much of the central Brooks Range and surrounding wilderness. It preserves a large, roadless portion of the range.
North Slope Borough: A local government area covering Alaska’s Arctic coast and extending south into the Brooks Range. Its communities and land management span the range’s Arctic-facing side.
Alaska Interior: The inland region of Alaska, south of the Brooks Range and centered on the Yukon and Tanana river basins. The range separates this inland region from the Arctic Slope.
Anaktuvuk Pass: A mountain pass and settlement in the central Brooks Range of Alaska. It is a rare natural corridor across the range’s rugged central section.
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge: A protected area in northeastern Alaska extending from the Arctic coast into the Brooks Range. Its southern mountains and northern coastal plain meet across the range’s northern extent.
Inupiat: An Indigenous people of northern Alaska and adjacent regions, with distinct communities and languages. Inupiat communities have longstanding ties to the Arctic Slope and northern range.
Continental Divide: A drainage boundary separating river systems that flow toward different oceans. The Brooks Range forms part of this divide in northern Alaska.
Glaciation: The formation, growth, and movement of glaciers and ice sheets over land. Past glaciation carved valleys and shaped high terrain in the Brooks Range.
