Brushwork

Brushwork is the visible manner in which paint is applied to a surface. It includes the direction, texture, density, and character of individual strokes.

Brushstroke: A mark made when a brush moves paint across a surface. Individual strokes combine to create the visible character of brushwork.
Vincent van Gogh: A Dutch Post-Impressionist painter known for expressive color and energetic marks. His directional strokes make brushwork a conspicuous part of the image.
Oil painting: A painting medium in which pigments are bound with drying oils. Its slow drying and workable consistency permit blending and varied stroke textures.
Pointillism: A painting technique that builds images from small, distinct dots of color. Its repeated dots organize color and form differently from directional brushstrokes.
Impasto: A painting technique that applies paint thickly enough to create raised texture. Thick paint makes brush marks physically prominent and catches light.
Rembrandt: A Dutch painter and etcher of the seventeenth century, known for portraits and biblical scenes. His varied paint handling ranges from delicate detail to forceful, raised strokes.
Acrylic painting: A painting medium using pigments suspended in an acrylic polymer binder. Its fast drying changes how long strokes can be blended or reworked.
Knife painting: A painting approach that uses a palette knife to spread or shape paint. It produces marks with a blade rather than a brush.
Glazing: A technique that applies thin, transparent paint layers over dried paint. Glazes can soften or conceal the texture of underlying strokes.
Frans Hals: A Dutch Golden Age portrait painter renowned for lively, loose handling of paint. His rapid, visibly separate strokes give portraits an impression of movement.
