Budapest

Budapest is Hungary’s capital and largest city, situated on the Danube. It formed in 1873 through the unification of Buda, Pest, and Óbuda.

Danube: The second-longest river in Europe, flowing from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. The river divides Buda’s hills from Pest’s plains and links the city’s bridges.
Roman Aquincum: A Roman city on the site of present-day Óbuda, once the capital of Pannonia Inferior. Its ruins preserve Budapest’s earliest major urban history.
Hungarian Parliament Building: The seat of Hungary’s National Assembly, completed on the bank of the Danube in 1904. Its riverside location makes national government part of Budapest’s defining cityscape.
Hungarian Revolution of 1848: A revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary seeking national independence and liberal reforms. Pest became a center of revolutionary activity decades before the city’s unification.
Buda: The western, hilly part of Budapest, historically a separate town from Pest. Buda was one of the three settlements united to form the city.
Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin: The late ninth-century settlement of the Carpathian Basin by Magyar groups. It established the medieval Hungarian polity from which Buda and Pest developed.
Buda Castle: A historic palace complex on Castle Hill in Budapest, now housing cultural institutions. The former royal residence anchors the city’s heritage tourism.
Hungarian Soviet Republic: A short-lived communist state that governed Hungary from March to August 1919. Its government operated from Budapest during a turbulent postwar period.
Pest: The eastern, largely flat part of Budapest, historically a separate town from Buda. Pest became the commercial and administrative center on the river’s east bank.
Ottoman Hungary: The lands of the Hungarian kingdom under Ottoman rule, chiefly from the sixteenth to seventeenth centuries. Ottoman rule reshaped Buda and left baths that remain part of the city’s heritage.
