Buddhaghosa

Buddhaghosa was a fifth-century Indian Theravada Buddhist monk and scholar. His Pali commentaries, especially the Visuddhimagga, helped establish the commentarial tradition in Sri Lanka.

Pali: A Middle Indo-Aryan language used in the Theravada Buddhist canon and its commentaries. Buddhaghosa wrote and compiled his major works in this language.
Visuddhimagga: A comprehensive Pali manual of Buddhist doctrine, meditation, and liberation attributed to Buddhaghosa. It is his best-known synthesis of Theravada teaching and practice.
Anuradhapura: An ancient Sri Lankan capital that was a major center of Buddhist monastic life. Buddhaghosa is traditionally said to have composed major works there.
Pali Commentarial Tradition: The body of Pali explanations and interpretations of the Theravada Buddhist canon. Buddhaghosa’s works became a defining foundation of this tradition.

Mahavamsa: A Pali chronicle of Sri Lankan history and Buddhist institutions, compiled centuries after many events it describes. Its account preserves a major traditional biography of Buddhaghosa.
Theravada Buddhist Exegesis: The interpretation of Theravada scriptures through linguistic analysis, doctrinal explanation, and inherited commentary. His commentaries established influential models for explaining canonical texts.
Pali Canon: The collection of scriptures preserved by Theravada Buddhists, also known as the Tipitaka. Its texts are the foundation repeatedly explained in Buddhaghosa’s commentaries.
Sumangalavilasini: A Pali commentary on the Digha Nikaya, the collection of long discourses. It exemplifies his explanations of canonical Buddhist sermons.
