Buddhas of Bamiyan

Two monumental Buddha statues carved into sandstone cliffs in Afghanistan’s Bamyan Valley in the sixth century. The Taliban destroyed them in 2001, leaving their niches as traces of a major Buddhist site.

Bamiyan Valley: A valley in central Afghanistan whose cliffs contain Buddhist caves, monasteries, and the niches of the Buddhas. The statues were carved into cliffs along this valley’s ancient routes.
Rock-cut architecture: Buildings and spaces formed by excavating natural rock rather than assembling separate materials. The figures and their niches were carved directly from the cliff face.
Taliban: An Islamist political and military movement that governed most of Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 and again from 2021. The movement ordered the statues’ destruction in March 2001.
