Bulgarian language
Bulgarian is a South Slavic language spoken primarily in Bulgaria. It is written in Cyrillic and is closely related to Macedonian.
South Slavic languages: A branch of Slavic languages spoken chiefly in the Balkans, including Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, and Slovene. Bulgarian belongs to this branch, whose members share historical roots but differ in grammar and standardization.
Old Church Slavonic: The earliest literary Slavic language, developed in the ninth century for Christian texts and worship. Early Bulgarian states became central to its literary tradition and spread.
Macedonian language: A South Slavic language standardized in the twentieth century and spoken primarily in North Macedonia. Bulgarian and Macedonian are closely related, but have separate standards and national identities.
Bulgarian literature: Literary works written in Bulgarian, spanning medieval religious texts through modern poetry, fiction, and drama. Its history tracks changing forms of written Bulgarian and the language's cultural role.
Russian language: An East Slavic language spoken primarily in Russia and written using a Cyrillic alphabet. Both use Cyrillic, but Russian retains noun cases that Bulgarian has mostly lost.
Cyrillic script: An alphabetic writing system used by many languages across Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Bulgarian uses a national form of Cyrillic, with letters representing its distinctive sound inventory.
Glagolitic alphabet: The oldest known alphabet created specifically to write Slavic languages, devised by Constantine-Cyril. It preceded Cyrillic in the early Slavic literary culture that shaped Bulgarian writing.
Serbian language: A South Slavic language spoken primarily in Serbia and written in both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets. Serbian shares Slavic ancestry with Bulgarian but retains grammatical features Bulgarian largely lost.
Bulgarian language education: The teaching and learning of Bulgarian as a first or additional language. Schools and textbooks transmit the standardized form while also teaching literacy in Cyrillic.
Polish language: A West Slavic language spoken primarily in Poland and written with a Latin-based alphabet. Polish contrasts with Bulgarian in both Slavic branch and standard writing system.
