Bulgarian Revival

The Bulgarian Revival was a period of cultural, educational, and political renewal from the 18th century through the establishment of an autonomous Bulgarian principality in 1878.

Paisius of Hilendar: A Bulgarian monk whose 1762 history urged Bulgarians to value their language and past. His history is widely treated as a starting point of the Revival.
Bulgarian language: A South Slavic language written in the Cyrillic alphabet and spoken chiefly in Bulgaria. Standardizing and teaching Bulgarian was central to the Revival’s cultural program.
Sophronius of Vratsa: A Bulgarian bishop and writer who continued Paisius’s work and published early printed Bulgarian books. His writings carried Revival ideas to a wider audience in the early 19th century.
