Knowra Bulk cargo Bulk cargo Bulk cargo is unpackaged, homogeneous material transported in large quantities. It is loaded directly into a ship’s holds or cargo spaces rather than carried in individual packages.
Dry bulk cargo : Unpackaged solid commodities transported in large quantities, such as grain, coal, and iron ore. These solids form one major branch of bulk cargo.
Conveyor belt : A continuous moving belt that transports materials between locations. Conveyors move many dry bulk commodities between stockpiles, ship loaders, and terminals.
Iron ore : A naturally occurring rock from which iron can be extracted economically. Iron ore is a major dry bulk commodity shipped to steelmaking centers.
Containerization : The use of standardized reusable containers to transport goods across multiple modes. Containers carry discrete loads, unlike unpackaged bulk cargo.
Liquid bulk cargo : Unpackaged liquids transported in large quantities, commonly through tanks, pipelines, or specialized vessels. Liquids form the other major branch, requiring tanks rather than holds.
Ship loader : A terminal machine that transfers cargo into a ship’s holds. Ship loaders direct bulk material into holds at high volume.
Coal : A carbon-rich fossil fuel formed from ancient plant matter. Coal is transported as dry bulk for power generation and industrial use.
Break-bulk cargo : Cargo transported as separate pieces or packages rather than in standardized containers or loose bulk. Break-bulk goods are handled individually instead of being poured or pumped.
Bulk carrier : A merchant ship designed to carry unpackaged dry commodities in large cargo holds. Its holds are built for loading, carrying, and discharging dry bulk.
Ship unloader : A machine or system that removes cargo from a vessel at a port. Unloading equipment empties bulk holds into terminal handling systems.
