Bungo Channel

Bungo Channel is the sea passage between Kyushu and Shikoku in southwestern Japan. It connects the Seto Inland Sea with the Pacific Ocean.

Seto Inland Sea: A mostly enclosed sea between Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu in southwestern Japan. Bungo Channel forms one of its principal openings to the Pacific.
豊後水道: The Japanese name for Bungo Channel, commonly rendered as Bungo-suido. This Japanese name is used for the same passage.
Uwajima: A coastal city in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku’s western coast. Its port and shoreline face the channel.
Sada Misaki: A cape at the western tip of Shikoku, projecting into Bungo Channel. It marks a prominent point on the channel’s eastern margin.
Kyushu: The southwesternmost of Japan’s four main islands. Kyushu forms the channel’s western side.
Kii Channel: A sea passage between Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula connecting the Seto Inland Sea and Pacific Ocean. It is another Pacific opening from the Seto Inland Sea, farther east.
Oita Prefecture: A prefecture in northeastern Kyushu, facing the Seto Inland Sea and Bungo Channel. Its eastern coast borders the channel.
Tsurumi Peninsula: A peninsula in Oita Prefecture extending into the northern part of Bungo Channel. Its headlands help define the channel’s northern coastline.
Shikoku: The smallest of Japan’s four main islands, lying south of Honshu. Shikoku forms the channel’s eastern side.
Kanmon Straits: A narrow waterway between Honshu and Kyushu connecting the Sea of Japan with the Seto Inland Sea. It is a western entrance to the inland sea on the opposite side of Kyushu.
