Buprenorphine

Buprenorphine is a medication that partially activates opioid receptors and is used to treat opioid use disorder and pain. Its ceiling effect on respiratory depression generally makes it safer than full opioid agonists, though serious harm remains possible, especially with sedatives.

Partial agonist: A substance that activates a receptor but produces a smaller maximum response than a full agonist. Buprenorphine’s limited receptor activation underlies its ceiling effect on respiratory depression.
Opioid use disorder: A treatable condition involving problematic opioid use that causes clinically significant impairment or distress. Buprenorphine reduces withdrawal and cravings as medication treatment for this disorder.
