Burgenland

Burgenland is Austria’s easternmost federal state, stretching along the borders with Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Its landscapes, history, and culture reflect centuries of Central European borderland exchange.

Treaty of Trianon: The 1920 peace treaty that defined Hungary’s postwar borders after the First World War. It transferred most of the territory that became Burgenland from Hungary to Austria.
Eisenstadt: The capital of Burgenland, located in eastern Austria near the Hungarian border. It is the state’s administrative center and smallest Austrian state capital.

Blaufränkisch: A dark-skinned red grape variety widely grown in Central Europe. It is a signature red wine grape of central and southern Burgenland.
Treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye: The 1919 treaty that set the terms of peace between the Allied powers and Austria after the First World War. It assigned western Hungary’s German-speaking districts to Austria.
Northern Burgenland: The northern part of Burgenland, including the area around Neusiedler See and Eisenstadt. Its settlements and vineyards form the state’s most populous and economically prominent region.
