Burgundian State

The Burgundian State was a composite of territories ruled by the Valois dukes of Burgundy, linking lands in France and the Low Countries without becoming a unified kingdom.

Philip the Bold: Philip the Bold was the first Valois duke of Burgundy and founder of the dynasty’s territorial expansion. His marriage to Margaret of Flanders began the Burgundian connection to the Low Countries.
Duchy of Burgundy: The Duchy of Burgundy was a French fief centered on Dijon and ruled by the Valois dukes. It was the dynasty’s principal French possession, distinct from its northern territories.
Battle of Nancy: The Battle of Nancy was fought in 1477, where Charles the Bold was killed by forces led by René II of Lorraine. Charles’s death ended his campaign to expand the state and triggered a succession crisis.
Kingdom of France: The Kingdom of France was the monarchy whose crown claimed authority over the Duchy of Burgundy as a fief. The duke’s French lands remained legally tied to a kingdom whose power he often challenged.
Margaret III, Countess of Flanders: Margaret III ruled Flanders and other territories before her marriage to Philip the Bold. Her inheritance brought wealthy Low Countries lands into the Valois dukes’ orbit.
Burgundian Netherlands: The Burgundian Netherlands were the Low Countries territories assembled under the Valois dukes of Burgundy. These northern lands supplied much of the state’s wealth and political weight.
Treaty of Arras (1482): The Treaty of Arras was a 1482 agreement dividing parts of Mary of Burgundy’s inheritance between France and the Habsburgs. It formalized French gains from the collapse of Burgundian power.
Holy Roman Empire: The Holy Roman Empire was a central European political structure of kingdoms, principalities, and free cities. Several northern Burgundian territories belonged to the Empire rather than the French crown.
John the Fearless: John the Fearless was duke of Burgundy from 1404 until his assassination in 1419. His rule extended Burgundian influence amid the French civil war.
States General of the Netherlands: The States General was an assembly of representatives from the provinces of the Low Countries. Dukes used it to negotiate taxation and coordinate policy across provinces with separate privileges.
