Burhs

Burhs were fortified settlements in Anglo-Saxon England, built chiefly to defend against Viking attacks and support local administration. Their network linked military defense with towns, markets, and regional government.

Burghal Hidage: An early tenth-century document listing burhs in Wessex and the hides assigned to their defense. Its assessments show how a burh’s defensive workforce was calculated and organized.
Battle of Edington: The 878 battle in which Alfred’s West Saxon forces defeated the Great Heathen Army. Alfred’s victory preceded the political and military consolidation that enabled his burh reforms.
Anglo-Saxon borough: An urban settlement in Anglo-Saxon England, often associated with a fortified center and organized local community. Many burhs developed into boroughs as defensive sites acquired lasting urban functions.
Motte-and-bailey: A medieval fortification consisting of a raised earthwork mound and an adjoining enclosed courtyard. This later castle form differs from the burh’s settlement-centered defenses and earlier historical setting.
Hide (unit): A variable unit of land assessment used in Anglo-Saxon England, often associated with the resources needed to support a household. The Burghal Hidage uses hides to estimate the labor available for maintaining burh defenses.
Great Heathen Army: A large Viking force that invaded Anglo-Saxon England in 865 and campaigned across several kingdoms. Its campaigns exposed the limits of isolated defenses and intensified the need for fortified centers.
Winchester: A historic city in Hampshire that served as a major royal and ecclesiastical center of Wessex. Winchester illustrates how a burh could become a durable political and administrative center.
Roman Britain: The period of Roman rule in Britain, from the first-century conquest to the early fifth century. Roman towns and walls supplied precedents, but burhs belonged to a different political and military system.
Anglo-Saxon burh wall: A defensive wall enclosing an Anglo-Saxon burh, often built with earth, timber, or stone. Walls turned settlements into defensible strongholds and shaped their capacity to resist attack.
Alfredian reforms: Administrative, military, and educational changes made under Alfred the Great in late ninth-century Wessex. Burhs formed one part of Alfred’s broader program to strengthen the kingdom.
