Burke and Wills expedition

The 1860–61 Victorian Exploring Expedition crossed Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria, becoming the first European-led expedition to cross the continent from south to north.

Cooper Creek: An ephemeral river system in central Australia that flows intermittently toward Lake Eyre. The expedition’s depot at the creek became the base for its northern push and the site of its final deaths.
Robert O’Hara Burke: An Irish-born police officer who led the Victorian Exploring Expedition across Australia in 1860–61. Burke commanded the expedition’s northward party and died on the return journey.
Australian inland exploration: The exploration of Australia’s interior by Indigenous peoples and, later, European expeditions. The Victorian expedition belonged to a wider nineteenth-century effort to traverse and map the continent.
Burke and Wills Royal Commission: A 1861 Victorian inquiry into the conduct and deaths of the Burke and Wills expedition. The commission examined the expedition’s planning, leadership, and rescue efforts.

William John Wills: An English-born surveyor and astronomer who served as the Victorian Exploring Expedition’s second-in-command. Wills helped lead the Gulf-bound party and died with Burke at Cooper Creek.
Australian gold rushes: A series of nineteenth-century gold discoveries that brought rapid migration and wealth to Australian colonies. Gold-rush prosperity helped Victorian colonists finance ambitious inland exploration.
Burke and Wills Dig Tree: A tree at Cooper Creek associated with the expedition’s depot and the message marking buried supplies. The tree preserves the episode in which Burke’s party reached the depot after Brahe had departed.
Gulf of Carpentaria: A large shallow sea inlet between Cape York Peninsula and Arnhem Land in northern Australia. Burke and Wills reached its southern edge, completing the northward crossing.
John King: An Irish-born member of the Victorian Exploring Expedition who survived its fatal return from the Gulf of Carpentaria. King was the only member of Burke’s northward party to survive, aided by Yandruwandha people.
