Burkhanism

Burkhanism is an indigenous religious movement that emerged among the Altai people in the early twentieth century. It joined local religious traditions with opposition to Russian rule and Christian missionary influence.

Altai people: A Turkic-speaking Indigenous people whose homeland lies in the Altai Mountains of southern Siberia. Burkhanism arose among Altai communities amid rapid political and religious change.
Tengrism: A broad label for religious traditions among Turkic and Mongolic peoples centered on sky, spirits, and sacred relationships. Burkhanism developed within a wider world of Inner Asian religious traditions.
Burkhanist prayer: A form of devotional address to sacred powers practiced by adherents of Burkhanism. Prayer offered a religious practice distinct from the older shamanic seance.
Altai Republic: A federal subject of Russia in southern Siberia, home to many Altai people. Burkhanism’s later history unfolded in the region where Altai communities remained rooted.
Ak Jang: The name commonly used for Burkhanism, meaning “White Faith” in Altai. The movement’s own name emphasizes its distinctive religious identity.
Altai shamanism: Indigenous Altai ritual traditions involving specialists who mediate with spirits and other-than-human powers. Burkhanism inherited local spiritual concepts while challenging some established ritual authorities.

Chugul Sarok Chandyk: An Altai woman whose 1904 visions and prophecies helped spark Burkhanism. Her reported encounters with Oirot Khan are associated with the movement’s beginnings.
Altai Mountains: A mountain system spanning parts of Russia, Mongolia, China, and Kazakhstan. The mountains and their sacred places anchor Altai religious life and Burkhanist practice.
