Burmese Way to Socialism

The Burmese Way to Socialism was the state-led ideology of Ne Win’s military government, combining nationalization and isolationism with Burmese nationalism and Buddhist ideas.

Socialist Programme Party: Burma’s sole legal political party from 1964 until the military coup of 1988. It served as the ruling party through which Ne Win’s government organized the socialist state.
Ne Win: A Burmese army officer who ruled Burma from 1962 to 1988, chiefly as head of its military government. He led the coup and government that adopted the Burmese Way to Socialism.
1962 Rangoon University protests: Student protests against Ne Win’s military government that culminated in the destruction of Rangoon University’s student union building. The violent suppression of opposition marked the regime’s early coercive turn.

Burmese Way to Socialism constitution: Burma’s 1974 constitution established a one-party socialist republic under the Burma Socialist Programme Party. It gave the ruling party and socialist state a constitutional framework.
Union of Burma: The independent Burmese state established in 1948 and renamed the Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma in 1974. The ideology was developed and implemented within this post-independence state.
