Burundian Civil War

An armed conflict in Burundi between government forces and rebel groups, triggered by the 1993 assassination of President Melchior Ndadaye and ending with a 2000 peace agreement and later rebel settlements.

Melchior Ndadaye: Burundi’s first democratically elected president, assassinated during a failed coup in October 1993. His assassination triggered the crisis that became civil war.
National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy: A Hutu-led Burundian rebel movement that became the country’s ruling party after the civil war. Its armed wing became the largest insurgent force and later entered government.
Pierre Nkurunziza: A Burundian politician and former rebel leader who served as president from 2005 to 2020. He led the CNDD-FDD as it moved from insurgency into electoral politics.
