Knowra Bushveld Complex Bushveld Complex The Bushveld Complex is a vast layered igneous intrusion in South Africa, formed from successive injections of magma. Its rocks host the world’s largest known reserves of platinum-group metals.
Layered mafic intrusion : A large igneous body formed as successive magma layers crystallize within the crust. The Bushveld Complex is the largest and most economically significant example.
Platinum-group metals : Six chemically similar transition metals: platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium, and osmium. The Bushveld Complex is the leading source of several of these metals.
Bushveld Igneous Complex age : The Bushveld Complex formed about 2.06 billion years ago during the Paleoproterozoic. Its age constrains when the intrusion and its mineral deposits developed.
UG2 chromitite layer : A major chromitite horizon in the Bushveld Complex that also contains platinum-group metals. It is one of the principal mined platinum-bearing layers.

Paleoproterozoic : A geological era spanning roughly 2.5 to 1.6 billion years ago. The complex formed during this era, amid major changes in Earth’s crust and atmosphere.
Platreef : A thick, irregular platinum-group metal deposit in the northern Bushveld Complex. It contrasts with the thinner, more laterally continuous reef-style deposits.
Magma chamber : A subsurface reservoir where molten rock accumulates, cools, and crystallizes. Repeated magma replenishment is central to explaining the complex’s layered structure.
Impala Platinum : A South African mining company whose operations include platinum-group metal mines in the Bushveld Complex. Its mines extract ore from the complex’s layered deposits.
